New Release: ‘Choose Your Stores’

I’ve just uploaded a new release (v2.3.1).

The main new feature is the ability to choose the stores you want to follow; if you only want info about Nook books in the US, or Kindle books in the UK, now you can!

This was the #1 most requested feature; please let me know how it works for you.

Choose the stores you want in your settings page at
http://luzme.com/profiles/edit/.

Thereafter, you should only see those stores displayed on any book’s page; and
you’ll only get email alerts for those stores.

Full list of changes:

  • ‘Choose Your Stores’
  • Added Carina Press
  • Added Powells
  • Added Mills & Boon
  • Added Sony Canada
  • Added Bookstore page, to display all known ebookstores around the world
  • Support for multiple Amazon wishlists
  • Show ‘pre-order’ info
  • Show Amazon Kindle Plus format for AV-enhanced books
  • Improve handling of non-English language books

New: Set your price threshold

I’ve just uploaded a new release (v2.2.7).

The major change is that you can now set a price threshold on your watchlist, so you’ll only get alerts when a store decides to sell the book at a price you’re willing to pay.

Full list of changes:

  • Price threshold on watchlist
  • Added a ‘terms of use’ page including a privacy statement
  • Added a ‘thanks’ page
  • Upgraded to Bootstrap2
  • Added microformat markup using the schema.org vocabulary

What’s the price of an ebook? £15 at Waterstones!!

I don’t understand Waterstones ebook pricing strategy, I really don’t.

They’ve just put up the prices on quite a few bestsellers to £15.85.

Does Waterstones really think anyone is going to pay them nearly £16 for the ebook version of Lee Child’s “The Affair”, when you can get the hardback from Waterstones itself for £9.49, or the same ebook for £8.49 from Apple, Google or Kobo; or the Kindle version for £6.79?

It’s the same story but even worse with Gary Neville’s autobiography, Red – £15.86 from Waterstones, against £4.99 from Amazon, Apple, Google and Kobo.

What extra quality can they possibly be adding to justify charging 3 times as much?

Ebook prices change very frequently so these examples may all have changed by the time you read this, but the current prices can be found at :

FutureBook chart with prices 27 Jun 2011

Here’s this week’s Futurebook chart with Luzme prices.

FutureBook chart with prices, 27 Jun 2011

You can see the original live at http://luzme.com/chart/futurebook.

Some idle musings on the data:

  • Why, I wonder, is Waterstones the only bookstore not to stock Karin Slaughter’s “The Unremarkable Heart”? It’s been top of the list for 3 weeks now.
  • I notice that Amazon has it 10% cheaper than the rest: a whole 4p!
  • Given that the number #3 “Catch Your Death” is only available at Amazon, that shows how strong Amazon’s grasp on the market is.
  • Apple stand out as most expensive by over a pound on 2 of the titles, Rosamund Lupton’s “Afterwards” and Michael McIntyre’s “Life and Laughing”. I wonder if they realise?

UK ebook bestseller prices trending down?

I’ve started to do some historical analysis of the ebook price data I’ve been collecting.

In honour of the fact that I’m now going to be blogging for the Bookseller magazine, I decided to look at the UK market first.

So I took the most recent Futurebook Top 10 from the Bookseller, and looked back to see what the price you’d have paid for this set of 10 over the last 3 months.

Here’s the result, a definite trending downwards.

ebook Price Watch: the Futurebook Top 10 from June 10th 2011

What this doesn’t show, however, is the cause and effect – did these books get in the Top 10 because their prices were cheaper than the competition? or did the bookstores/publishers drop the prices because the books were selling so well?

I also looked at one other set of books, the 8 books which made up the Richard&Judy selection for Spring 2011.

ebook Price Watch: Richard & Judy Spring 2011

This doesn’t show such a definite trend. but the average cost of the books starts above £5 and ends below it. I’ll do the same for the Summer selection; it will be interesting to compare the two sets of books.
